Kaye Sasaki GARDEN
Like many older, inner city sites, this rear garden in Hamilton’s south west neighbourhood always had some promising qualities; they were just buried beneath the deteriorated patio and overgrown vegetation. Imagined as a series of squares 12 ft x 12 ft, more or less, the new 2 level cedar deck and garden was built over 3 summers beginning in 2014. Despite facing north over the TH+B railway cut, welcome periods of direct sunlight manage to penetrate the dense canopy of existing Maples. Owners Jennifer and Les share the otherwise tranquil space with their 3 cats, and the other usual urban wildlife. Carefully placed specimens of Hinoki Chameocypress, Juniper and Oakleaf hydrangea have established a structure for an array of interesting annuals through the active growing season.
